New Feline Osteoarthritis Treatment

Posted In: Feline Health & Wellness, News Updates

Cats hide almost everything, especially pain. But if your cat is dealing with osteoarthritis pain, you’ve probably noticed changes in their everyday behavior. Things like jumping, climbing stairs, and even playing might not be so easy for them. Thankfully, there is a new breakthrough treatment for the control of osteoarthritis pain in cats! Available later in 2022, Solensia is a monthly injection administered at your vet's office that can help control the pain your cat may experience from osteoarthritis.

Solensia is a monoclonal antibody that targets nerve growth factor, a key driver in osteoarthritis pain progression. Solensia effectively controls osteoarthritis pain in cats; generally improving their mobility, comfort, and well-being. Unlike other medications, Solensia is not metabolized by the organs, but rather undergoes protein degradation just as normal enzymes made within the body. Solensia is a once-monthly injection soon to be available at AMCMA!

We are excited to be carrying this medication soon and we will be letting our clients know when it’s available to prescribe. According to the manufacturer, it will be available to veterinarians in the U.S. in the second half of 2022. It has been available in Europe since May 2021 with very positive results thus far. In a three-month research study, approximately 77% of cat owners saw improvement in signs of pain when their cats were treated monthly with the injection. While feline osteoarthritis isn’t curable, the pain from OA can now be effectively managed.

Look out for further updates from AMCMA when Solensia becomes available!
