Heartworm Incident Map

Heartworms have been found in all 50 states, including Missouri and Illinois. Conditions in our region lead to the perfect environment for heartworms:

  • High humidity and temperatures, including warm spells during the winter and fall seasons
  • Presence of mosquito breeding areas, like rivers, lakes, and standing water
  • Population of hosts, like coyotes, foxes, and infected dogs

The American Heartworm Society distributes a heartworm incident map each year, based on the average number of cases per reporting veterinary clinic. You can see that our region has a high number of incidents, especially toward the south and along the river lines.

The Animal Medical Center of Mid-America has veterinarians at three locations that can answer questions about your pet’s health. Call 314-951-1534 or click here to request an appointment online.
