Help For Your Anxious Pet

As we head into the warmer months, pet fears and anxieties tend to increase. Thunderstorms can be intense, you may be leaving your pet home alone more frequently, or you may be traveling with your pet.

The good news is that there are things that you can do to help relieve your pet's fears. But, some medications and supplements take time to fully work. Here are some options that may help your anxious pet:

Pheromones for pets, such as Adatptil® for dogs and Feliway® for cats, are odorless to humans. They mimic chemicals naturally produced by their species. A calming pheromone, like the one produced by a nursing mother cat or dog, can help your pet feel less stressed. The pheromones can be sprayed on your pet’s bedding or in places that your pet likes to lay on. You can also purchase a pheromone collar for dogs or a diffuser that allows the pheromone to cover a room. You can purchase Adaptil and Feliway at AMCMA or at Meds4Pets.org.

Purina Pro Plan® Calming Care for Dogs
Calming Care is a probiotic supplement that has been shown to help dogs with external stressors like separation anxiety and unfamiliar visitors, and it also helps dogs cope with loud noises. It may take six weeks before you see results. You do not need a prescription to purchase Calming Care, and you can get it at either of our locations or purchase it at Meds4Pets.org.

Zylkene is a behavior supplement that is available for dogs and cats. It can be used for long or short-term use, and it helps pets relax. It is an oral capsule that can be given whole or opened and sprinkled on your pet’s food. It is recommended to use Zylkene for a day or two before a planned event or change in environment. Some pets may need administration up to a week before. Zylkene can be purchased at AMCMA or at Meds4Pets.org.

The cannabis plant contains THC, which creates a euphoric sensation and CBD, a non-hallucinogenic component derived from hemp. Hemp comprises a tiny amount of THC, not enough to create a high. Though CBD is not approved by the FDA, on-going research has shown that CBD can help manage anxiety by changing the brain’s receptor response. It is important for pet parents to use a product that is specifically formulated for pets and to discuss dosage with their veterinarian.  We carry a product called HempRX for Dogs and Cats and would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Sileo is the first FDA-approved treatment for dogs that suffer from noise aversion. Available by prescription, it is a gel that is applied on the inside of your dog’s cheek. It takes up to an hour for Sileo to take full effect, but it lasts 2-3 hours and can be re-applied every two hours, up to five times.

This prescription medication changes how messages are sent to brain cells. It can be given as needed, in the case of thunderstorms or fireworks, or it can be given daily for the treatment of anxiety. There are some side effects, so you’ll want to discuss this medication with your veterinarian.

There are other options that may work for your pet. Because some of the products work best if they are started before the anxiety kicks in, the sooner you talk to your veterinarian, the better. If you would like to make an appointment, give us a call at 314-951-1534.
