New Year’s Resolutions

The beginning of a new year is often a time where we reflect and make goals to better ourselves- but your furry friends can be part of your “New Year, New You” plans as well! It’s always important to make sure your pets are eating healthy and getting appropriate amounts of exercise (especially during colder months when the temptation to be sedentary might be higher), but you might even consider incorporating your pets into your own new routines. Below are a few examples/suggestions to start:

  • Resolve to take your pet for a longer-than-usual walk at least three times per week
  • If you’re cutting back on sweets, carbs, etc. for your own health, consider making similar cutbacks to your pet’s intake of treats, table scraps, etc.… If your pet is spending more time indoors and less time exercising due to the cold, consider adjusting their meal portions accordingly as well
  • Go to the dog park at least once a week
  • Resolve to stay on top of your pet’s annual wellness exams at the vet, especially for aging pets
  • Resolve to do some volunteering or community service, like walking shelter dogs, donating one of your pet's beds, towels, or a new pack of food!
  • Resolve to spend more one-on-one time with your pet, even if it’s just at home watching TV and cuddling or playing catch, tug-of-war, etc.

If none of these suggestions resonate with you, then get creative and find something that works for you! Talk with your veterinarian about any significant changes to your pet’s diet and exercise routines, as the same tips won’t apply to every pet across the board. No one says you *have* to make changes to your lifestyle just because it’s a new year, but we’re sure your pets will appreciate the extra effort and time spent with them.
