Pet Dental Health Tip: Get the Sealant

Posted In: Feline Health & Wellness, Canine Health & Wellness

After your dentist cleans your teeth, he or she probably applies a sealant to prevent plaque formation. Did you know sealants are important for pets too? At the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America, we highly recommend that pet parents to opt for a sealant after their dog or cat’s dental cleaning, which can help protect against plaque for up to six months.

Both AMCMA locations have dedicated dental suites and state-of-the-art dental equipment to make sure your pet gets a thorough cleaning on the teeth and below the gum line. And we go to great lengths to make sure your pet is comfortable, pain-free, and continually monitored during the procedure.

Just after the cleaning, we can apply a sealant to prevent plaque from attaching to those now-pearly whites and below the gum line. Not only is the sealant like a bandage, it can also help protect the harder to reach teeth that pet parents often miss when brushing their pet’s teeth at home. The brand of sealant we use is Sanos. Unlike other sealants, it does not require frequent at-home reapplication, making it an ideal choice for our clinic and our patients.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the importance of regular brushing at home and dental cleanings in the veterinarian’s office. Untreated dental disease only gets worse in time. Not only does it cause bad breath, it can adversely affect your pet’s kidney, liver, and heart function. Plus, it is extremely painful for your pet to have broken and diseased teeth and gums.
