Summertime Fears

Summertime can be scary for pets. Between the loud thunderstorms, firework celebrations, family gatherings, and travel, many pets become anxious and afraid. Rather than let your pet suffer, there are things you can do to help your dog or cat feel more comfortable. And because it can take time for some products to be fully effective, it is best to plan ahead and start early.

Here are some products that may help your pet cope with fear and anxiety:

Pheromones for pets, such as Adatptil® for dogs and Feliway® for cats, are odorless to humans but they mimic chemicals naturally produced by their species. A calming pheromone, like the one produced by a nursing mother cat or dog, can help your pet feel less stressed. There are several options when it comes to these pheromones:

Adaptil for dogs comes in a spray that can be applied to your dog’s bedding, in the crate, or in places that your dog likes to lay on. The spray lasts 4-5 hours and can be reapplied as needed. Adaptil spray is also a great option for dogs who get nervous during car rides. Simply spray the inside of your car as needed. Adaptil is also available in a diffuser that lasts a month before a refill is needed. The diffuser covers an area of 700 square feet, so you may find multiple diffusers work well if you have a bigger home. Finally, you can try an Adaptil collar for dogs and puppies. This is perfect for continuous reassurance to your dog since the collar stays on for four weeks, except when bathing or grooming.

Cat lovers rejoice – there are pheromone options for our feline family members too! Feliway Classic comes in a spray and diffuser. You can use the spray on the places your cat likes to hang out, like a cat perch or soft blanket. If your cat is urine-marking or scratching on inappropriate surfaces, spray Feliway in the area to curb this behavior. The diffuser will cover areas up to 700 square feet, and refills last about a month.

You can purchase Adaptil or Feliway in our clinics or online here. If you order online, you have the option of home delivery or pickup. And, manufacturer rebates are available for first-time or repeat purchases!

Calming Care
Calming Care is a product from Purina® Pro Plan’s veterinary line. It is a probiotic supplement that has been shown to help dogs with external stressors like separation anxiety, loud noises, and unfamiliar visitors. Calming Care can take up to six weeks to see results. You do not need a prescription to purchase Calming Care, and you can get it at either of our locations or order it online for home delivery or curbside pickup.

Much like swaddling an infant, gentle and constant pressure helps to calm anxiety, fear, and overexcitement. The ThunderShirt® is proven to be 80% effective and is a great option for quick relief. It may take up to three usages, but most pet parents see results right away. With sizing ranging from under 8 pounds to over 110 pounds, you can find the best fit for your pet. And, there is even a ThunderShirt for cats! To purchase a ThunderShirt, visit us in person or order online for home delivery or pickup.

Zylkene® is a behavior supplement that is available for dogs and cats. It can be used for long or short-term use, and it helps pets relax. It is an oral capsule that can be given whole or opened and sprinkled on your pet’s food. It can be purchased in our clinic or ordered online.

Supporting balanced behavior and relaxation, Solliquin® is a supplement for dogs and cats. It comes in a tablet form for medium to large dogs or a soft chew that can be given to dogs and cats. It contains all-natural ingredients that encourage calm and content feelings. It can be purchased in our clinic or ordered online.

Sileo® is the first FDA-approved treatment for dogs that suffer from noise aversion. Available by prescription, it is a gel that is applied on the inside of your dog’s cheek. It takes up to an hour for Sileo to take full effect, but it lasts 2-3 hours and can be re-applied every two hours, up to five times.

This prescription antidepressant changes how messages are sent to brain cells. Trazadone® can be given to dogs and cats as needed, in the case of thunderstorms or fireworks, or it can be given daily for the treatment of anxiety. There are some side effects, so you’ll want to discuss this medication with your veterinarian.

Since Sileo and Trazadone require a prescription from a veterinarian, you will need to schedule an appointment before the medication can be prescribed.
