AMCMA is offering a $20.24 special microchip promotion for the month of May for both dogs and cats!
This is the season when more dogs are spending time outdoors and indoor cats may be more interested in making a break for it – that is trying to get outside. It only takes a second of distraction, such as carrying groceries or trying to corral children for a pet to escape a house or yard.
When an animal is found and taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic, one of the first things the staff does is scan the animal for a microchip. If they find a microchip, and if the microchip registry has accurate information, they can quickly find the animal’s owner.
A microchip is a small, electronic chip enclosed in a glass cylinder that is about the same size as a grain of rice. It’s activated by a scanner that is passed over the area, and the chip transmits the identification number to the scanner, which displays the number on the screen.
The chip is injected under the skin using a hypodermic needle. It is no more painful than a typical injection. No surgery or anesthesia is required—a microchip can be implanted during a routine veterinary office visit.
Microchipped animals are far more likely to be returned to their owners. In one study, microchipped stray dogs were returned to their owners at more than double the overall rate for all stray dogs. For stray cats, the difference in return rates was even more dramatic.
In addition, if your cat needs spay/neuter surgery, you can add that on for a total (SNIP & CHIP!) of $40!
Operation SNIP, a program of the Humane Society of Missouri and the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America, provides low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for the pets of Missouri residents.
These procedures are helpful in preventing animal overpopulation, prevent a number of health and behavioral problems for pets, and help keep our communities safe.
