Got Skunked? How To Get The Stink Out

June 12, 2025

Though it’s an encounter no one hopes to experience, many dog owners will have to deal with their dog being sprayed by a skunk at some point in their lives. Skunks spray when they feel threatened, and a curious pup may think that the skunk lifting its tail is an invitation to sniff.

Skunks typically aim for the dog’s face, so rinsing your pup’s eyes with fresh water is the first order of business. Afterwards, it’s time to wash their coat out with a special solution made from one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap or hand soap. Mix these ingredients in a plastic bucket and apply it to your pup’s coat immediately. Leave the solution on for about 5 minutes, then rinse it out with lukewarm water. Repeat the process as needed to get the smell out.
